    • Why it's important to find the right walking stick for you

    It is very important that a walking cane is the right height for you personally. A cane that is too low or too tall may do more harm than good. So, if you order a walking cane from Somerwood, we ask you to choose exactly how high you need it to be - and we then tailor the cane to your requirements. (We don't recommend shortening a carved walking cane as this can affect the pattern on the stick.)

    Walking Sticks: finding the correct height To find out what height a walking stick should be for you:
  • Feel along your thumb and the side of your wrist and, about an inch above the base of the thumb joint, you will find a sharp bit of bone
  • Now stand with your arms by your sides, wearing the kind of shoes you normally walk in. Stand in your natural position - so don't stand up straight if that is not your normal position.
  • The distance between that sharp bone and the ground is the correct height for any walking cane or stick.
